How this glasshouse grower uses a battery to control costs and help balance the grid Smart energy management

Smart energy management

The challenge

For many glasshouse horticulture businesses, energy is one of the largest cost items. That is no different for this innovative operator, who produces over 30 million Santini stems annually across 6 hectares. The market is changing rapidly: dynamic energy pricing, grid congestion, and the growing demand for flexibility make smarter energy management an increasingly critical priority.

"An electric boiler converts electricity into heat, but I had no heat shortage. I wanted to store electricity and export it when prices peak. That is where the real value lies."

The operator was looking for a solution that not only reduces his energy costs, but is also future-proof. So he set out to find a way to store energy temporarily and deploy it strategically.

The solution: battery storage and intelligent dispatch

Working together with Battiq and the Enova energy manager, a 1 MW battery system was selected. It is intelligently controlled to make optimal use of low-price periods and generate revenue by exporting electricity during peak pricing events.

"The battery is connected to our CHP units, the Priva system, and the LED lighting. Enova makes sure everything works in concert and performs at its best."

The operator kept control of the process but was well supported throughout. Enova in particular proved to be a partner that genuinely takes the burden off your hands.

"I want to understand what is happening. Enova does not just advise, they take initiative and fix things. That gave me confidence."

The results

The battery is now running to full satisfaction. The operator earns a daily income through participation in TenneT's aFRR (automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve) market, even when no electricity is physically delivered, purely for making flexibility available to the grid.

"I needed 400 euro a day to pay back the battery in four years. Half of that I already get from grid balancing. The rest comes from smart charging and discharging. Enova manages all of that."

In addition, he now has a robust solution for future grid reinforcement requirements and is actively contributing to balancing the electricity network.

Safety first

Safety first

The battery has been installed with fire safety and insurability firmly in mind. Given the operator's background in the fire service, no compromises were made on this point.

"Batteries need to be sited safely. We chose a location at a safe distance from the main buildings, fully agreed with the insurer. That gives peace of mind."

Looking ahead: energy as a collective responsibility

The operator sees battery storage as an essential step towards a more sustainable energy system, and thinks beyond his own business.

"We need to move with the sector. Glasshouse horticulture can actually help balance the grid. Think of shared battery installations or electric vehicles as temporary storage."

Long story short

This customer shows that intelligent energy management pays off. By investing in battery storage and working with the right partners, savings are made and new value is created, both for the business and for the wider energy network.
